< Diving in Malta >

The maltese islands offer some of the best scuba-diving in Europe, and have many advantages for beginners, including a pleasant climate.
Warm, clear water, a wide range of interesting dive sites, many of them accessible from the shore.
There is a large number of diving schools with qualified, professional instructors.
Most schools offer courses that lead to qualifications issued by one or more of the internationally recognised diving bodies:

  • Profesional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI)
  • British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC)
  • Confederation Mondiale des Activites Subaquatigues (CMSA)

    Requirements

If you want to to learn to dive in Malta, there are a few things reguired from you, not least of which is the ability to swim.
You will also have to pass a simple medical examination to make sure you are fit to dive - this will be organised by the dive school, and cost about Lm3.
The minimum age is 12 years, and those under 18 must have written parental consent.

    Courses ad Qualifications

Most schools offer a 'taster course' or 'beginner's dive', which begins with one or two hours of shore-based instruction on the working of scuba equipment and safety procedures. Then you will be introduced to breathing underwater in a pool or shallow bay, and will end up doing a 30-minute dive in the sea.
A beginner's course should cost no more than Lm15 including the compulsory medical examination.

    Diving Schools

There are about 30 dive schools im Malta. The majority are members of the

    Snorkelling

Snorkellers can rent a mask, tube and flippers and frolic at will - but beware of speedboats.

    Water Skiing & Windsurfing

The big bays - Melieha, St Paul's and Salina, for instance have plenty of room for waterskiers. Just ask at the hotels or on the beaches. Windsurfers have discovered the breezes of Melieha, St paul's, Ramla, Marsaskala, and other bays. ( If that's not adventurous enough, join the annual Malta to Sicily race.)

    fishing in VallettaFishing

Finally, fishing requires no licence in Malta.
