Hotels in Malta range from crumbling but characterful old townhouses in Valletta to modern, gilt and chrome palaces of five-star luxury overlooking a private marina.
The vast majority are bland, faceless tourist htels, block-bookedby package tour companies in summer, and either closed or eerily quiet in winter.

Typical high season rates are Lm8 to Lm15 per person, but they rise to Lm50 for the four- and five-star places.

However, there ara few places that have real character, like the Castile Hotel in Valletta, which is housed in an old maison; the Xara Palace in Mdina; and the L-Imgarr and Ta'Cenc on Gozo, but the later three hotels are among the most expensive in the islands.

Guesthouses are usually family-run, with six to 10 rooms, and are often good value at around Lm5 to Lm7 per person.
Toilets are mostly shared, but the breakfast is normally included in the price.
